My anti-virus detected a virus in the userinit.exe file yesterday. I knew it was something to do with the logon so I restored it from the quarantine. I rebooted my system and now I get the messageuserinit logon application has encountered an error every time I start Windows. I get a black screen. But I can access task manager. Can anybody give me a solution?

It may be caused by a corrupted registry key.

1. Open Task Manager, click ‘New Task’ at the bottom, type regedit.exe and press Enter.

2. Navigate to HKLMSOFTWAREMicrosoftWindows NTCurrentVersionWinlogon and in the right pane look for UserInit, which should contain C:WINDOWSsystem32userinit.exe followed by a comma.

Any other program name(s) following the comma can be removed. If you make any changes, restart the computer.

3. If it’s not the above key that is the problem and you can execute a Command Prompt, run the System File Checker (SFC) from an elevated Command Prompt, i.e. click the Windows Orb (Start) > All Programs > Accessories and right-click Command Prompt, then ‘Run as Administrator’. Type sfc /scannow (note the space) and press Enter. This may take some time and, depending upon your installation of Windows, you may have to put the DVD in the drive.

If you can’t run a Command prompt from within Windows, boot from the Windows DVD, answer a few questions, choose Repair and then choose Command Prompt from the Repair menu.
