I have an eMachines e725. It's up there in years tech wise, my mom got it about 8 years ago. But we've kept the drivers updated and done needed maintenance, taking it to a small repair shop to have it checked up on every other year or so. Works like a charm! My mother gave me this laptop around Thanksgiving. I use it for gaming as well as assignments for college. I don't run anything too rough on it, the newest game I have installed is Portal, which is maybe 10 years old? Well, Monday night, I went to take a break and decided to play the Sims 2. The Sims 2 works perfectly on this laptop, doesn't trouble it at all. However, this time the entire thing froze. I tried CTRL-ALT-DELETE, nothing. So I turned it off via the power button. I powered it back on, nothing. It powers up to the eMachines logo with an f2 setup option, however, there is a BIOS password that no one remembers, so that's out. That's the only button that pops up. Them it goes to a black screen with no cursor. The fan and hard drive are still running, all the appropriate lights are on as they should be...it's just a blank, black screen. And the only way out of it is to press the power button. And then it flashes a green screen before it shuts off, which concerns me but I'm sure is nothing bad. It's a quoick flash before it turns off. I KNOW the display works fine. If it didn't it wouldn't be able to display the logo, would it? My concern is that I could have a particularly nasty virus on it. My mom had Norton Antivirus running on it for years but the contract expired and I, being a poor college student, can't afford to renew it. So therefore I've kept a close eye on the task manager and my systemx86 folder for anything suspicious. I'm not am expert oioin those matters, but I did some looking around to see what I needed to keep an eye on, researching the names of files and applications that I was concerned about. And then over the holidays my sister was using my laptop and got onto firedrop.com which from what I understand is a very virus-infested site. She downloaded a few things but I deleted those files. However I'm sure I've missed a few, and I'm concerned that one may have um...ruined my computer. There have been a few viruses scurrying around but I've contained most of them. I've thought that the computer itself has been acting a lot like it needs to have Windows 7 reinstalled on it--recently my grandfather had to do the same with his laptop and it acted in a similar matter, thiugh it is a 5 year old HP laptop. I have decided not to update to Windows 10 until updates and support for Windows 7 ends, I'm quite comfortable where I'm at OS-wise. Fortunately, I have a CD on its way. I just want to verify that I'm on the right track. Is there anything I might be forgetting or missing?
Split from this thread. I am suddenly having windows update issuues too since the Jan 11 2017 update I applied of malicious and sp1 monthly roll up fixes to my WIN 7 64 bit version. I am getting the 80080005 code by windows updater having issues suddenly this month just days after that Jan fix applies. I will first try a clean reboot and if that does not work go back to the last restore point. ***Post moved by the moderator to the appropriate forum category.***
My PC automatically installed the cumulative update KB3213986 on the 13th January 2017. I have not changed any hardware. I have tried various options to re-activate it, and the report I get from Microsoft's throubleshoot is : "We found a Windows 10 Home digital license for this device running Windows 10 Home. To activate using this digital license, you need to install Windows 10 Home" I upgraded from Windows 7 Home when Windows 10 was first released, and my Windows 10 Home has been activated and running fine since then. It is only since the above update was installed that a notification appeared on my screen advising me to Activate Windows. Has anyone had a similar issue and found a/the solution? Thanks
Hotmail has stopped working since last year and I'm fed up. I'm not a computer guru and can't follow half the instructions you give - it's a foreign language. just a simple explanation and assistance on getting it to work would be great. It's windows 10.
I have Windows 10 on my ASUS gaming laptop. When I try to click on my search bar on the task bar, nothing happens. It doesn't pop up into the little menu that it used to, and even Cortana is completely inaccessible. In addition to this, trying to right-click on the Windows button in the bottom left hand corner does nothing as well. When looking up how to fix it elsewhere, it was suggested to restart it through the task manager, but I couldn't even find the application. How do I fix this?

My lenovo laptop came with windows 10 installed. I'm a bit of a packrat, and I frequently fill my hard drive, then go through and delete things to make room for more. Recently, when it was approaching full again, I got a message about an I/O error, and the computer started running really slowly. I tried restarting, and I knew I had a real problem when scandisc started running. Moreso when it said it couldn't fix the problem and boot. I then tried resetting windows, first with the "keep my stuff" option, and then with the "get rid of everything" option. No joy. Previously I fixed a different windows problem by resetting with a recovery disc, so I tried that. Still nothing. I would be willing to do a clean install, but the laptop didn't come with a product key, only Lenovo's built in windows. When I was fixing the aforementioned earlier problem, I called Lenovo Tech support and they said that I couldn't actually do a complete reinstall, but would have to reset their windows version. That doesn't seem to be cutting it, though. I'm on a pretty tight budget, so I'm really hoping there's some way to get this computer back in working order without shelling out $120 on a new Windows key for a machine that came with windows. I'd love to recover my files too, if that's possible, but my top priority is just to have a real, functioning laptop, as opposed to an expensive paperweight. I welcome any suggestions. I'm pretty desparate.

Intel[R] Xeon[R] processor E3-1200v3/4th Gen Core processor PCI Express x16 Controller-0c01 does not work. It states code 10. An ACPI Object failed to transition state. Therefore, the computer can not connect to the GPU. What should i do to solve the problem? I have tried reinstall the drivers, recover my laptop to win 8, but the problem still remains.
Is Publisher 98 compatible with Windows 7? Have new laptop and installed Publisher 98 on it but cannot open my files created on Publisher on another computer and brought over. Also have Office 2016 installed on laptop--could that make a difference?
My Windows 7 Home Premium laptop just installed the Updates KB3212646 and KB890830. It did so overnight. In the morning the laptop was rebooted and everything seemed fine, however after the next reboot this issue started popping up. The following services are immediately obvious as having failed on login: -Windows Audio -System Event Notification Service -Themes Service There might be others, but these are the ones i get notified about via the taskbar popup, the volume icon, and the Aero theme not loading. My computer usually logs in in about 3 minutes, and it takes longer for certain things like flash player to function (15 minutes). I don't know why this started happening fall 2016, but i could still use everything else during those 15 minutes, and it was not a very big issue as it only seemed to affect flash. Until yesterday. Now however, everything hangs for 30 minutes during which i can try to open applications but they randomly freeze, while after the 30 minutes i have to restart the theme service manually to get the aero theme back. This is extremely annoying, so any help would be greatly appreciated! ----------attempted solutions---------- I tried doing a netsh catalogue reset, and it did not help. It has been suggested that i delete the C:WindowsSystem32LogFilesWMIRtBackup folder, but i could not do that, as it is in use apparently. I could also not do it in safe mode (the same login problems are also present there, with all applications randomly freezing for the first 30 minutes). In the System Event Viewer, if i try to filter critical entries, one of the logs (MediaCenter) has an error saying that the given channel can't be accessed. Several of the services show up with critical errors in the Event Viewer. The picture above is the full list of critical errors from 1 login. It took exactly 30 minutes.
I got a HP laptop for christmas in 2015 i used it for about 7 months, but then i lost my charger. I had finally found a charger. When the battery was full i turned it on and i put in the password. It didn't say that it was incorrect, but it said something similiar to "You cannot sign in to this device right now. Go to account.live.com to fix this problem." Is it that i got it wrong? I thought of all the possible passwords, but it just kept saying that.
