Free upgrade offer to Windows 10 is about to end. How will someone substitute a defunct HDD in a laptop which has a BIOS activation key without an image system backed up?Windows RT
I´m just went trough this situation.
My laptop had a Windows 8 SL license, with an activation key in its BIOS. As usual, the manufacturer didn´t send any kind of image to reinstall the OS. Later, I bought a license and upgraded it to WIn 8 Pro Media Center that got updated to Windows 8.1 Pro Media Center and, finally, upgraded to Windows 10 Pro. (Nice.. i7, 8 Gb RAM, !Tb HDD and Nvida video board)
Some few days ago, its Hard Drive "went borogoves".
Microsoft technicians told me, and so I did, that I had to go through every OS my computer have experienced - from windows 8 SL to windows 10 Pro so I didn´t loose my Pro activation key.
While in the process I received an annoucement notifying that the time for the free upgrade to Windows 10 is about to come to an end. So I got scared.
What if it happens again?
- When some HDD dies after july 2016 (no "if" - it simply happens everyday) how will people recover their products?
Will Microsoft recognize what Windows version every laptop or All-in-one computers have been working prior the accident by the BIOS engraved in the BIO - avoiding the upgrade after upgade procedure? (once it will not be avaible anylonger, right?)
Or is Microsoft preparing a tool so people will be able to save a system image that will be useful to reinstall the Microsoft products into the new HDD?
What can I do today to be prepared?
