Windows Update, other programs cannot connect

Windows Vista

Asked by: Marshall23

I downloaded a game the other day from Gamehouse, tried to install it, but the downloader can't connect to the internet. In my troubleshooting so far I have found other programs that also can't connect, including Windows Update and my antivirus program, Bsecure. I can run Firefox without any problems. Internet Explorer 8 runs, but seems to have a problem displaying the page. I've tried a system restore, scanned with other antivirus programs, followed this thread, "http://social.answers.microsoft.com/Forums/en/vistawu/thread/853ad800-c4d7-4336-bb90-c349135d7748", but nothing seems to work.

I'm running Windows Vista SP1 on a Toshiba laptop, with Firefox as my default browser. This problem has appeared within the last month.

Try the following steps to fix the issue.

Step 1: Reset the IE settings to default: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929135
> Click Start, type inetcpl.cpl and hit enter.
> Click Advanced tab, click Reset, again click Reset and then click Close.
> Click OK to close the Internet Properties window.

Step 2: Rename the host file.
> Open %windir%System32Driversetc and rename the host file.
> Restart the computer.

All the best! If the above steps resolve the issue, then do mark the post as Answered. Thank you. Amzas
